Third full summit of the heads of 13 member states and delegates of OPEC took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Sunday. The main question of the summit was supposed to be the impact of the oil industry on the environment. As it shined up during the meeting, the U.S. Dollar value appeared as more important issue to deal with. There are countries such as Iran and its ally Venezuela that consider U.S. dollar "worthless piece of paper" as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said to the reporters after the end of the summit. U.S. dollar has been historically the currency that always paid for world's oil. Since 9/11 the value of American money is enormously depreciating. This fact influences the value of world oil reserves and the countries that provides petroleum in the world market are loosing their money. Changing the currency can also seem like a political issue considering attitudes of Iran towards President Bush and his politics. When I am thinking about it and trying to find the motivation of making such a big decision in OPEC as changing the currency that always has been legal tender in the gas industry, it must be real. It is incontrovertible fact that U.S. dollar is falling down with the speed no one like to see. But is this really the reason to change the currency and set up new rules that will proclaim American weakness? There still are allies of the United States that will keep the currency on. The question is for how long they are able to face the tense of the world's low oil praises and sequential rising prices for common people?

Chris Cantell annouces Virgin is set to buy Northern Rock

It may seem like an ordinary investment for them and a strange one for most people, but the Virgin company has decided to dive right into the financial market and buy itself a bank. They are determined to own Northern Rock, a traditional bank in the United Kingdom, which they will integrate into the Virgin Money brand. Northern Rock has been severely hit by the mortgage crisis sweeping the United States and customers have lost confidence in it, rushing to withdraw their deposits. The British government has tried to help it in its hour of need, by pouring $40 billion in its reserves, but it seems it was not enough to keep it alive enough for it to recover. The bank will be sold at a discount, or be nationalized, as no bidders agreed to pay the sum owned to the state as well as the bank itself. Right now, Northern Rock stock is worth 1 British pound and bidders include J.C. Flowers & Company, the U.S. private equity company Cerberus and Olivant Advisers of London, apart from Virgin. But it is only Richard Branson's company that came up with a detailed plan on how to save the bank, including repaying some of the debt in the beginning. Bidders exist, but it will ultimately be shareholders who are set to lose the most no matter what the decision is. In the meantime, customers' money is protected by pumping billions and Alistair Darling, Chancellor of the Exchequer, is taking most of the blame for the way things evolved at Northern Rock.

Chris Cantell annouces Blockbuster getting digital

Despite the fact that technology is usually seen as Blockbuster Inc.'s enemy, Blockbuster CEO James Keyes still hopes that with new changes to the company customers will end up burning movies on CDs or other devices in Blockbuster's kiosks. He adds that store rentals will be an important part of the business for at least five more years even if it won't be the world's biggest movie-rental company. Guvernul are incredere ca va fi capabil sa rezolve problema si sa recosntruiasca casele, problema cea mai mare acum fiind ajutoarele pe termen scurt, cum ar fi mancarea si apa. ONU intentioneaza sa intensifice in curand operatiunile de ajutor. Nivelul distrugerilor nu este atat de mare cum se banuia initial dar din cauza terenului jos si a calitatii materialelor de constructie din zona, reconstructia va dura mult timp si va si scumpa. Intinderi mari de teren arabil au fost afectate si previziunile nu sunt deloc pozitive, mai ales fiindca fermele cu fost deja inundate serios in august. Lucratorii de la Semiluna Rosie si o echipa militara americana sunt deja la locul dezastrului, ajutand oamenii din aceasta zona saraca a Bangladeshului. Tara a fost afectata in trecut de o furtuna tropicala, care a luat 140.000 de vieti in 1991; de atunci, au fost construite sisteme de alarma care sa ajute oamenii sa scape de furia naturii.

U.S. economic stimulus package

For the last few weeks there was a sharp fall on global economic market, what caused big pressure on local markets of economy. US financial system, as one of the biggest all over the world, was affected, too. And this is the reason, why there is a need to hurry in accepting economic stimulus package. President George W. Bush in collaboration with top lawyers of the America made an agreement, that in next few weeks they should, unconditionally, authorize new economic package. "Our definition of 'soon,' obviously, is in the next few weeks," said Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. He also assigned the date to be the week of February 18. The need of accepting economic stimulus package confirmed Bush by the words: "All of us understand that we need to work together. All of us understand that we need to do something that'll be effective. And all of us understand that now's the time to work together to get a package done." The purpose of this document is not to achieve a recession or increase in the economic indicators, as there was a little slowdown, but anyway it was a slowdown. "This is a flexible, this is a resilient, this is a dynamic economy, and the entrepreneurial spirit is high. But there is some uncertainty that we're going to have to deal with," said Bush. All the parties believe that they will reach the agreement on this stimulus package, soon.

The most famous stock exchange.

Its definitely the New York Stock Exchange. When you say stock exchange the first thing you think about is the New York building. Big, old building with marbles in the front. After 9/11 there is huge American flag on the marbles. You don't think about London, Tokio or Bombay stock exchange. Yes, these are important too, some of them are more powerful and bigger, but still they are not as famous as this one. So how did it start? First original Stock Exchange in New York was, and still is, located at Wall Street, which is by the way, known as one of the richest streets in the world. Every wealthy and good company has to have their headquarters at Wall Street. So the first SE started with 24 stock brokers and that time was called New York Stock and Exchange Board. A little too long name don't you think so? They had to rent their place for 200 $, but after Great Fire in the city it was moved to temporary building. They changed the name, to these days used New York Stock Exchange. But the SE was increasing so they needed bigger place to be able to work, so they decided to build a new building. The new and now so famous building was opened in 1901, It was one of the biggest places in the city. Some buildings and floors were added later, the last one in 2000, and some trading rooms were closed, because of increasing of electronic trading. In 1978 was the main building written to the list of national Historic Landmark, which contains buildings, structures or other object which are historic important or significant.

Wall Street, give us our daily bread

Economy is like a tide, we never know what will it bring and what will take it away. Situation on Wall Street is these days the most discussed topic and no one can clearly say what will happen in few hours. Two days ago there were quite big losses on the Asian's and European stocks. Now we have new information about the sharp raising of some of indexes from Asian stock. For example Japan's Nikkei with its last Tuesday's biggest drop gained more than 400 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and so rose on 3.37 percent. There is also other growing - The Korea composite Stock Price Index rose 3.1 percent and The Kospi gained 2.7 percent. The European stocks had also problems on Tuesday, and then some actions raised a little bit for example France's CAC 40 rose 2.1 percent. Even though European officials thought European economies will weather turbulence which came from American Wall Street nowadays it looks Europe could have a little problems though. Everyone is fairly monitoring stock trading and waiting for any indication. Heads of every Department of the Exchequer around the world is trying to keep calm, but sometimes their statements don't sound so assured. As Michael Ellam, British Prime minister's spokesman said, government would do everything to keep economic stability; Indian finance Minister Chidambaram claims "There is no reason at all to allow the worries of the Western world to overwhelm us," and urges investors to stay calm. All these aspirations have the opposite influence on me, and I am still more confused and don't know what to expect. People are not stupid not to see that situation around the world is chaotic and also still more analysts have skeptic attitude to American stocks' situation. What is more, no one supposes that any from the American authorities could prevent a recession of American economy and every single stockbroker in Asia and Europe is ready and waiting for instructions. In cases like this a man doesn't know what to do, but he doesn't want to wait helplessly neither. Anyway I am still thankful I am not a stockbroker.

The move to rescue the U. S. from recession

The Fed jumped into the action. After widespread discussions about the current economic situation in the United States possibly facing recession, the Federal Reserve cut the interest rates. The reduction constitutes a drop from 4.25 down to 3.5 per cent. Before Tuesday's move, the Fed had cut interest rates three times, at first in September by a half-point and then by smaller quarter-point moves in October and December. The explanation by the Fed states that the decision came to effect as a response of "a weakening of the economic outlook and increasing downside risks to growth." Basically, there have raised concerns that weakness in the world's largest economy, the one of the United States, was spreading worldwide. The consequent issue is therefore whether it will work. The answer lies in the unique character of the American recession that is likely caused by two major triggers. The first one is bursting of the U. S. house price bubble and the other one is connected with the credit bubble. According to most economists, the move of the Fed won't solve the first problem. The imbalance between supply and demand in the U. S. is just too extreme. The second crisis isn't believed to be retrieved easily by the recent rate cut as well. Other specialists defend the bold action of the Federal Reserve. They affirm the Fed helped this way the start of the latest housing boom. Moreover, the policy was motivated not by the desire to achieve any particular level of asset prices, but, as claimed "rather by the Federal Reserve's assessment of how changes in asset prices were affecting the forecast of growth and inflation." No matter what opinions belong to certain economic specialists, the final effect will be interesting for much wider public. Consequences will be seen and comprehended in the future regardless of those currently predicted. The American citizens definitely have something to look forward to.

Impacts of the Fed interest rate cut

This early morning the Federal Reserve announced an emergency cut in interest rate. After resumed Tuesday Wall Street did its best to join in the plunge, but by finishing down by 465 points, the Dow Jones industrial average redeemed a loss of 128.1, or 1.06 percent, at 11,91.19. Previously before trading, the Fed cut its benchmark federal funds rate by 0.75 percent to 3.5 percent. Moreover, it cut the discount rate that is directly charged to banks to 4 percent. This was the response to an international stock sell-off and to all worries about a feasible U.S. recession. For the future market, that is going to be held on the following Tuesday, it is estimated that the Fed will make a cut of approximately a 0.5 point. The cut was accepted by the majority of traders but the policy of the Fed was somehow not understood that it made the call between regularly scheduled meetings of its policy-making Open Markets Committee. The long-term recovery is guessed to be attributed to comeback of the housing recovery and improvement of customer's sentiment, which makes up the crucial part of U.S. economy. The reduction in interest rates is a tool the Fed is using to make a recovery in economy. It should retrieve economy in a way that it will provide it more available, meaning more cheaper, for the business to borrow money. However, the effect is not so conducive for housing. It has mainly to do with the worries about most of adjustable-rate mortgages which are continuously increasing, and also home prices that are thought to be falling this year. The Bush administration has assumed the package for $145 billion in tax cuts and the plan to stop plummeting of mortgage. After the Fed intervention it promised to maintain the arrangement. As Dana Perino, the pres secretary, said "I am not going to close off any dors."
